At 682m Slieve Meelmore is not technically over 700m but is classed as such for the annual Seven Sevens mountain race. The reasoning for this is that on older maps the height is mistakenly given as 704m although popular thinking is that the Six Sevens just doesn’t sound as good!
The most popular route to the summit begins at Cecil Newman Car Park (or Meelmore Lodge) at the start of the Trassey Track. Heading up towards Hares Gap you turn right just before the base and follow the path up past Pollaphuca to the style on the Mourne Wall which leads you to the top. The distance is roughly 2.8miles and 490m ascent and is quite a workout from the base of Hares Gap as the going is steep.
The Mourne Wall leads to the summit and there, like Slieve Donard, is a tower probably built to give some shelter to the workmen who constructed the wall. Meelmore also has what appears to be an old stonemasons hut at J302285 with plenty of part cut stone on its periphery showing that Meelmore was likely another spot that materials were gathered for the Mourne Wall.
