The MMRT was established in 1962 as the first mountain rescue team in Ireland covering the Mourne Mountains from Slieve Croob in the north to the Cooleys in the south. It operates 24/7/365 and has 25 full members and 6 associate members. The team is based in Newcastle and is entirely made up of volunteers living in the local area who are all experienced mountaineers willing to devote their time to responding to emergencies in all weathers. The team will regularly assist local Police and Coastguard in any area where their specialised knowledge can be of benefit.
